Arbórea Magna: Buenos Aires' tree of light (free, and best at sunset)

Red at sunset, purple after dark. Arbórea Magna is a giant tree of light in Buenos Aires' Parque de la Innovación, and it's one of the most photogenic free things to do in the city.
When to go
Get there just before sunset. As the sky goes dark you'll watch the tree change colour, from warm reds to deep purple. It's the kind of shot that works even on a phone: frame it against the last light in the sky, then stay ten more minutes for the night colours.
How to get there
Arbórea Magna is in the Parque de la Innovación in Núñez, right next to River Plate's Monumental stadium, in the north of the city. Entry is free.
- From Palermo or Belgrano it's a short taxi or rideshare.
- Trains on the Mitre line and several bus routes stop nearby. Check Google Maps or the BA Cómo Llego app for the best route from where you're staying.
- Avoid match days at the Monumental unless you want the full football crowd experience.
Make an evening of it
- Combine it with a River Plate stadium tour during the day.
- Head back towards Belgrano or Palermo for dinner. Parrillas don't really get going until after 9pm.
- If you love public art, spend the next day hunting painted shop shutters around the city.
Where to stay in Buenos Aires
For first-timers, Palermo is the easiest base: leafy streets, great food and quick access to the north of the city. Recoleta is classic and central, and San Telmo is better if you want old-town charm and the Sunday market.
